Why 'Make it Pop' is Killing Your Design Business

We have all been there. You send over a polished, thoughtful design V1, and the feedback comes back: "Can you make it pop?"

It is the most dreaded phrase in the design industry. Not because it is rude, but because it is useless. It offers no direction, no constraints, and no actionable steps. It is a feeling masquerading as feedback.

The Cost of Ambiguity

When you accept vague feedback, you are effectively agreeing to guess. You create three new variations—one brighter, one bolder, one with a drop shadow—hoping one of them matches the client's internal definition of "pop."

This process burns hours of billable time (or eats into your fixed fee) and erodes the client's trust in your expertise. They start to feel like you "just don't get it," when in reality, they haven't told you what "it" is.

How to Quantify "Pop"

The solution is translation. You must translate emotional requests into technical constraints.

  • Contrast: Are they asking for higher distinction between the foreground and background?
  • Saturation: Do they want more vibrant colors to draw the eye?
  • Hierarchy: Is the element getting lost in the layout?

Next time you hear "make it pop," don't open Figma. Open a conversation. Ask specifically about these three elements. Or better yet, use tools that force structured feedback from the start.

Don't let vague feedback slow you down.
